Presenter and network, center for documentation and information, operational center and initiator for new music since 1946 – the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) is all of these things. With its International Summer Course for New Music, its Archive, and its Library the IMD continues to make and document cultural history as a constant interplay of invention, performance, listening, reflection, and retention.
International Summer Course for New Music
The International Summer Course for New Music or simply: the Darmstadt Summer Course – was founded already in 1946, one year after the end of World War II, by Wolfgang Steinecke (at that time cultural consultant and Head of the Department of Arts and Culture) who had the artistic responsibility for the Summer Course up to his death in 1961. Further directors have been Ernst Thomas (1962-1981) and Friedrich Hommel (1981-1994). From 1995-2008 Solf Schaefer organized the Summer Course. With beginning of the year 2009, Thomas Schäfer became the new Artistic Director of the International Summer Course and of the International Music Institute (IMD).
