Call for Scores: Harp Composition Workshop

Tutors: Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir and Martin Iddon
Workshop with selection process
For participants of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2018
Maximum number of participants: 8 composers
Deadline for submissions: 15 March 2018

During the Darmstadt Summer Course 2018 Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir (harp tutor) and Martin Iddon (composition tutor) will offer a workshop for harpists and composers. Participating composers are asked to write a short piece (max two pages) for solo harp, preferably focusing on a specific contemporary harp technique. The goal of the workshop is to deepen the composers' understanding of contemporary harp technique and performance practice. As an alternative, composers are also welcome to present already existing solo pieces for harp.

Registered participants of the composition studios can e-mail by 15 March 2018 a sketch of a new composition planned for this workshop or a short text explaining the planned composition, OR a PDF file of ONE existing composition for harp solo. The application should also include a short CV. Pieces using extended techniques or unconventional performance practice are strongly encouraged. An overview of contemporary harp techniques and notation can be found on: www.harpnotation.com

The workshop tutors will select 8 composers for active participation by 15 April 2018. The pieces must be finished by 15 June 2018.

The chosen pieces will be rehearsed in Darmstadt by the harp students and introduced in common workshops where contemporary playing techniques, notation as well as general compositional questions will be discussed. Each piece will be discussed at least twice with about a week in between, during which the composers / harpists can work on changes and alterations suggested by the group. The results are supposed be presented in a workshop concert.
