Kranichstein Music Prize awarded

The 26-year-old composer Celeste Oram and the 23-year-old trombonist Weston Olencki are the recipients of the 2016 Kranichstein Music Prize. The prize, founded in 1952, is awarded to one current composition and one current performance (ensemble or solo) within the International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt and has a monetary value of 3.000 Euros.

The New Zealand composer Celeste Oram was a participant in this year’s workshop “Music in the Expanded Field” and joined the composition classes by Chaya Czernowin and Simon Steen-Andersen. She convinced the jury with her ability to create original formats for her work, which was evident in both a live radio play and a carefully choreographed performance. The works were strangely entertaining, informative, and engaged with history in a striking manner. The jury considers her work utterly relevant.

The trombonist and performer Weston Olencki lives in New York City and is a fellow of this year’s Summer Course. In his performances as an active participant at the Brass Academy and the workshop “Music in the Expanded Field” he showed a unique ability to work with sound and add his very own dimensions to the music performed. His understanding of the role of the musician in the current artistic environment is implicit in everything he does – from solo performances to his work with fellow musicians and composers.

At the awards ceremony on August 14 at Centralstation, the independent jury, comprising the composer Joanna Bailie, the accordionist Eva Zöllner and the curator Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen, also awarded six fellowships for participation at the 2018 Darmstadt Summer Course to the following musicians and composers: Quartetto Maurice (string quartet / Italy) Ine Vanoeveren (flute / Belgium), Nina Guo (voice / USA), Bethany Younge (composition / Ensemble Mocrep / USA), Reiko Yamada (composition / Japan), Mikołaj Laskowski (composition / Poland).
