Interpretation: 47th International Summer Course for New Music

Lessons with a recognized expert in the field of new music, rehearsals for a work from one’s own repertoire, a lecture, the exchange of ideas with a composer about playing techniques in his/her new piece, trying it out, finding other players, forming a trio ... that’s what a day at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music could look like for an instrumentalist. Or different.
From the beginning of January until the end of March 2014 instrumentalists can sign up online. Only for some instrumental classes special modes of application will be announced on this website, most of the others are open to all musicians interested in New Music. A list of the courses offered and the names of the tutors will also be published soon.

Every tutor forms his course individually: whether as single or group lessons, in the form of workshops on certain repertoire, playing techniques or together with composers, decides whether the participants should prepare compulsory pieces, solo or chamber music for Darmstadt, and whether presentations of results are appropriate. Information on all courses will be available on this website with the beginning of the registration period at the latest.

Besides the instrumental classes there is a huge number of other projects for interpreters. The Chamber Sessions are new in 2014: Chamber Music workshops with tutors for which one can already apply before the Summer Course. In addition, many lecturers will bring together their participants in small ad hoc-formations to rehearse, for example, pieces of present composers or interesting repertoire works. A Studio Interpretation is aimed at particularly advanced players. After the great success of the project Open Space in the years 2010 and 2012, the next Darmstadt Summer Course in 2014 will again reserve several rooms for self-organized projects, discussions, workshops or presentations. Furthermore, the Lectures and theoretical events which take place during the day are open to all participants of the Summer Course. An Eletronics Atelier not only invites composers and interested interpreters alike to take part.
