Termin: 10. Juli 2017, 20:00 Uhr

Ort: Schader-Stiftung, Goethestraße 2, 64285 Darmstadt

Eintritt frei

The Force of Things - eine Klangarchitektur

BLOG

Composer David Helbich's and Jennifer Walshe's composer perfomer workshops is redefining the classical music's traditional roles

In recent years the title composer performer has become more and more common. Together with Irish composer Jennifer Walshe, the Brussels based artist David Helbich leads this year's performer composer workshop at the Darmstadt International Summer School. I met up with him to reflect on how composers and performers can merge into one entity, and to hear more about their workshop.

Percussion concert showcases theatre and extremity

The four percussion pieces that comprised the Centralstation concert on 1 August were so hugely divergent in style and substance that experiencing them all within the space of a single evening was tantamount to whiplash. Performers Håkon Stene and Christian Dierstein offered a fascinating contrast. Dierstein's playing was extremely introverted, almost mime-like, as if performing a series of sacred rituals. Stene was the diametric opposite, manic and flamboyant, recklessly hammering wine glasses and cracking Noh-like facial expressions. Both were fascinating to watch, and obviously devoted a great deal of time, effort, and patience into their performances. It paid off.

Uraufführung mit Pannen

Stefan Prins' Piano Hero

Open Space flute performance confronts corporeality

The University of California at San Diego is a city on a hill – a citadel for some of the most exciting and radical experimentation occurring in the United States, being done by a hugely diverse student body from every continent. Three of its students – one current, two former –were on display at an Open Space performance this Wednesday. One was flautist Ine Vanoeveren, who has recently completed her PhD on performing Ferneyhough, and the pieces in this performance represent three of her closest and most fruitful collaborations with composers over the past four years.

A conversation with Steven Kazuo Takasugi

Boston-based composer Steven Takasugi's Sideshow, a music theatre piece performed by the Talea Ensemble, evokes the sights, sounds, and stories of the notorious circus events that took place in the amusement parks of Coney Island, New York during the early 1900s. This conversation took place at the composer's Darmstadt office.

BLOG

By Andrew Chung

Pianist Stèphane Ginsburgh steps onstage the second evening of the Darmstadt Fereinkurse to perform one of the first concerts of the festival calendar. The three completed works of Stefan Prins' Piano Hero (2011-2016), an ongoing cycle of works for keyboardist, live electronics, and video, unfold in a deeply paranoid reflection on surveillance and the extension of the performer through media technology. Prins' work joins the stream of socially critical events programmed for this year's 70th anniversary Ferienkurse.

Trials and Tribulations for Staatstheater Jury

BLOG

Out of 160 submissions, this evening five composers were each given the opportunity to showcase an opera scene, lasting approximately 15-20 minutes. The winning entry, to be decided openly on stage by an attending jury, would receive a full operatic commission for 2018. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, it was the jury that came to spark the most drama of the evening.

NEW: Feedback Sessions

Heloisa Amaral is offering a new workshop format at this years Darmstadt Summer Course: Feedback Sessions at the OPEN SPACE. Being able to share knowledge and expertise with colleagues is essential for the development of an independent professional artist. In performance arts such as theatre and dance concrete methods and strategies for peer-to-peer feedback are widespread; within contemporary music practice, however, the topic has not been given much formal attention. The feedback workshop proposed by the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016 is inspired by a method for actors and visual artists created by philosopher Karim Bennamar for the DasArts School in Holland. In addition to teaching musicians specific skills on how to give and receive objective and constructive feedback, the workshop will allow participants to present works in progress to open-minded colleagues.

OPENING: De Keersmaeker's "Vortex Temporum" on 29 July

Temporal whirl, temporal maelstrom – vortex temporum: the right metaphor for the opening of the International Summer Course for New Music in 2016. The Darmstadt Summer Course has existed for 70 years; it took place for the first time in 1946 at Kranichstein Hunting Lodge, before the gates of an utterly destroyed city. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's version of Gérard Grisey's masterpiece "Vortex Temporum" is the kick-off for a dense festival program with concerts, lectures, installations, workshops and interventions – almost around the clock, until 14 August!

We Spoke New Music : Call for Musicians

We Spoke invites musicians to work on a large scale version of Fritz Hauser’s conceptual work Schraffur during the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016. The work consists in scratching regularly the surface or string of any instrument (percussion or not) and to explore the micro differences in tone that come out of extremely slow shifts in position. All instrumentalists are welcome, we will be providing scratchable instruments and sticks to those who don’t have one. We will have a short daily cession from 3rd to 5th August, and a longer cession with the composer himself on 6th and 7th, culminating with a late morning performance on 7th August. Internal Call for Scores: Chamber Sessions

The Chamber Sessions, in 2014 initiated for the first time in Darmstadt by saxophone tutor Marcus Weiss, give a special focus to the potential of the about 400 Summer Course participants: Each of them is bringing "her / his" music, ideas and individual approaches to Darmstadt. The chamber music format Chamber Sessions is offering a framework for the exchange on rehearsal methodology, notation, current compositional practices and interpretation by facing a concrete score together. A Call for the Scores invites the composition students of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016 to submit pieces. The tutors will select the most interesting pieces for the project and will work on them together with small ad hoc ensembles (3 to 5 players). As soon as the pieces will be chosen, we’ll publish a Call for Musicians who can then sign up for a musical part.

New York is celebrating 70 years Darmstadt Summer Course

In the musical world the name of Darmstadt is synonymous with the International Summer Course for New Music. 70 years ago, the Summer Course was founded and since then it has made major contributions to music history: Nearly all prominent protagonists of the music after 1945 are somehow connected to Darmstadt, as are the aesthetic debates and fierce controversies on present and future composing. Outstanding performances by Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, David Tudor, Morton Feldman, György Ligeti, Luciano Berio, Gérard Grisey, Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough and many others are also part of the Summer Course history. Until today, the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) is organizing the Summer Course every two years and still it is unparalleled throughout the world with its hybrid format combining summer academy, festival and international discourse platform for contemporary music.

This is reason enough for the New York based ensemble scene to celebrate Darmstadt's legacy of radical innovation with a three-day music festival: From 9 to 11 May 2016 there will be concerts with ICE, Mivos Quartet, Talea, SEM and the Wet Ink Ensemble at Roulette (509 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217). Festival highlights include Matthias Spahlinger's “Extension”, Karlheinz Stockhausen's “Mikrophonie”, John Cage's “Concert for Piano and Orchestra”, new works by Ashley Fure and Darmstadt faculty member Jennifer Walshe as well as a performance of Helmut Lachenmann's third string quartet “Grido”.

Pierre Boulez dies at 90

Please click on the picture for opening the gallery. All photos (c) IMD Archive

French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez died at 90 yesterday evening in Baden-Baden. His name is closely related to the history of the Darmstadt Summer Course, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Montbrison (F) on 26 March 1925 and educated at Paris Conservatory, he attended the Darmstadt Summer Course for the fist time in 1952 when Olivier Messiaen was among the tutors. Boulez held courses and lectures himself every year from 1955 to 1957, then from 1959 to 1963 and for the last time in 1965. His Darmstadt lectures like "Alea" (1957), "Penser la musique aujourd'hui" (1960) or "Notwendigkeit einer ästhetischen Orientierung" (1963) are among his most important texts.

IMD wishes a Happy New Year!

IMD wishes a Happy New Year! In 2016, we are especially looking forward to the International Summer Course for New Music (29 July to 14 August 2016) and to celebrating its 70th anniversary. Online application will start on 15 January 2016!

Besides the long-term preparations for the next Summer Course, IMD was engaged in a number of other projects past year: In cooperation with Staatstheater Darmstadt we've presented the exhibition „In Darmstadt geboren! – Luigi Nono in Darmstadt" in June and now collaborate on the International Music Theatre Competition that Staatstheater Darmstadt has launched. We've also supported the Friends of IMD in establishing their new concert format „From Darmstadt" which had its premiere with a Dieter Schnebel concert & talk in Freiburg in June. The series of Darmstadt Music Talks – together with Jazzinstitut and Akademie fuer Tonkunst – was continued in 2015 with three topics: Culture on the Streets (with Léon Krempel), Music and Architecture (with Kerstin Schultz), Music and Censorship (with Christiane von Wahlert).

Geneviève Strosser and Dimitrios Polisoidis: Viola in My/Our Life

The reference to Morton Feldman’s famous composition "The Viola in My Life" is purely assotiative, but Geneviève Strosser and Dimitrios Polisoidis take the title of this piece quite literally for the conception of their jointly planned viola workshop within the next Darmstadt Summer Course: How can we consider from different perspectives the role of the viola in contemporary music, how can we think and discuss these issues? How can we create a meaningful exchange between performers and composers who want to write for this instrument? In five major sections the two „team teachers“ Geneviève Strosser (2012 viola tutor and 2014 main coach for our ENSEMBLE project) and Dimitrios Polisoidis (viola tutor in 2010) will discuss the outlined issues in close cooperation with and strong involvement of the workshop participants.

Helmut Lachenmann at 80

Please click on the picture to see the whole gallery. (All photos: Archive IMD)

Only few composers have had such a strong impact on contemporary music and musical thinking like Helmut Lachenmann: by his still challenging artistic conception and his highly differentiated sound world which has extended the spectrum of expression in new music considerably. Today, on 27 November 2015, Lachenmann turns 80.

The festival cresc... 2015 takes Helmut Lachenmann's music into focus. Today at 16:30, the Arditti Quartet will perform his string quartets, followed by a big orchestral concert in Wiesbaden at 21:00 and by further concerts with works by Lachenmann on Saturday and Sunday.

Highlights include the opening concert by Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra at Alte Oper Frankfurt, featuring Stanley Kubrick’s masterwork ›2001: A Space Odyssey‹, and the final concert by Ensemble Modern at Frankfurt LAB with world premieres of audio-visual works by Simon Steen-Andersen and Michael Beil. These will be flanked by four world premieres of inter-medial music film works by young composers and filmmakers under the title ›Quadruplets‹.

A second focus of the festival is set on the music of Helmut Lachenmann on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Key works for large orchestra are on the program as well as the world premiere of a new version of ›Air‹.

New Jury for the Kranichstein Music Prize 2016

Since its foundation in 1952, the Kranichstein Music Prize (Kranichsteiner Musikpreis) has been closely linked to the Darmstadt Summer Course. It has been awarded 34 times to a total of 175 laureates so far. For many of them the renowned prize has been an important milestone at the beginning of their career as musician, ensemble or composer. The total endowment sum of the Kranichstein Music Prize in 2016 will be 6,000 EUR, consisting of 3,000 EUR for the interpretation prize (ensemble or soloist) and 3,000 EUR for the composition prize.
Since 2010, an independent jury awards the Kranichstein Music Prize. The three-member jury is invited by the artistic director of the Darmstadt Summer Course, Thomas Schäfer. It consists of protagonists from different musical fields and jury members change at irregular intervals. For the Summer Course 2016 accordionist Eva Zöllner, who already was member of the jury in 2014, composer Joanna Bailie and festival director Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen have confirmed their participation.

Call for Participation: Writing Workshop 2016

For the fourth time the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016 will be offering a Writing Workshop. Although the concept of the project has been revisited and adapted every time, its core is still the same: focused support and concentrated training for young journalists in the field of contemporary music. The success of this format also shows its need – since 2010, applications have tripled and the quality of applications has increased at the same time.
After a successful test in 2014 the Writing Workshop 2016 will again be offered bilingual in German and English. We are delighted to have two very well known UK publicists on board: Anne Hilde Neset and Peter Meanwell, who will share the two project weeks. The German-speaking part will be directed by Stefan Fricke who has worked for the Writing Workshop since the very beginning and has played a key role in emerging the format. In the 2016 edition – again with the active support by Eberhard Bätza who will supervise the „temporary studio“ – an even stronger emphasis is given on the media broadcasting, web and blogging.
Application deadline for the Writing Workshop is 31 March 2016, please see the PDF "Call Writing Workshop" for details.

Call for Projects: Music in the Expanded Field

With the Call for Projects for Marko Ciciliani’s workshop “Music in the Expanded Field“ on audiovisuality IMD starts into the next planning phase for the 48th International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt 2016. We will gradually publish all calls on this website and will constantly provide an updated overview on current calls.

Marko Ciciliani’s workshop on audiovisuality approaches a central issue in the discussion on intermediality and authorship. The call is aimed at musicians, composers and sound artists who are expanding into visual designs while originating their motivations in musical ideas, thereby searching for genuinely audiovisual art forms. Deadline for applications is 15 December 2015.

ENSEMBLE 2016

After the large ensemble projects in 2010, 2012 and 2014 and the successful young ensemble programs in those years, it has become a matter of course that the Darmstadt Summer Course is offering formats for young ensembles besides the composition and interpretation workshops and that Darmstadt can serve as a working platform and network for ensemble start-ups.

In the past, the participating ensembles were chosen by a jury from an international call. This time, IMD will ask a group of Summer Course tutors and former participants who have a good overview on the international young ensemble scene for recommendations. From a list of 10 to 15 nominations IMD will choose a maximum of three ensembles that can take part in the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016.

New: Staubach Fellowships

For the next Darmstadt Summer Course (30 July to 14 August 2016) the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation will grant three Staubach Fellowships.
The Staubach Fellowship programme is designed to provide an opportunity for composers and performers who have already spent time as participants at the Darmstadt Summer Course (or similar equivalent experiences elsewhere in Europe or further afield), but who are still in the process of establishing themselves as artists. Appointment as a Staubach Fellow will provide the Fellow with coverage of half-board hotel accommodation during the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016, travel to and from Darmstadt, and free admission to all Summer Course events, and will provide the Fellow with the opportunity to develop a range of activities.

There will not be an application process for these grants. The Staubach Fellowship jury for 2016 (Rebecca Saunders, Martin Iddon and Thomas Schäfer) will nominate and contact the potential candidates. The Staubach Fellowship programme will replace the Staubach Honoraria that had been granted to young composers from 2010 to 2014.

Dieter Schnebel zum 85. Geburtstag

IMD wishes Happy Holidays!

The International Music Institute Darmstadt remains closed until 5 January. We wish you all Happy Holidays and all the best for 2015!

Besides the preparations for the next Darmstadt Summer Course (30 July to 14 August 2016) with its 70th anniversary in 2016 IMD is planning some major projects also for 2015: From 26 to 29 November 2015 we will be for the third time cooperation partner in the festival cresc… Biennale for Modern Music Frankfurt Rhine Main, that will focus on the subject "MUSIK - FILMBILD - MUSIK" and will also feature Helmut Lachenmann's 80th birthday.

An important milestone for our archive team will be reached in spring 2015: Since 2010 IMD works on the description and digitization of the unique collection on the Summer Course history: Metadata to the rich stocks of photos, recordings and written documents since 1946 are provided and made available on-line. We will start featuring some parts of IMD's digital collections on this website regularly.

Konrad Boehmer passed away

On 4 October 2014, the composer, music author and critic Konrad Boehmer pssed away at the age of 73 in Amsterdam. Boehmer, a sharp-tongued as well as very stimulating conversation partner, was born in Berlin in 1941, went later to Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne and attended at his invitation in 1959 for the first time the Darmstadt Summer Course. Boehmer was the first invited composer to tell his Darmstadt memories to Michael Rebhahn, Lukas Einsele and Christian Gropper in the course of the the IMD project „Nachhall“ („Reverberation“) . His critical words about the late 1950s, when the „initiative Darmstadt“ had been in danger of becoming an „institutiton“ and the avant-garde - in the words of Raymonds Radiguet - had started upright, but ended up on their knees, have not lost any of their relevance.
Michael Rebhahn collected some of Konrad Boehmer's Darmstadt memories in a 15 minute audio podcast.

Call for Papers Uni Siegen "Eine Wiener Darmstädter Schule?"

The 2014 Darmstadt Summer Courses' Analysis, Aesthetics and Theory Seminar Series

On the 7th August an overwhelming number of participants turned up to a modest classroom in the Bessunger Knabenschule, all in search of some rigorous early morning musicological stimulation. Three experts from quite diverse specialisms, Ulrich Mosch, Christoph Neidhöfer and Yuval Shaked, formed the panel of tutors who would guide the participants into 'Music and Space', this year's over-arching theme. It was a theme which offered two interwoven issues to be explored across five three-hour sessions and Ulrich Mosch opened the seminar series with a very necessary contextual overview.

It’s all about understanding

BLOG

It is the years of performing together that create magic and understanding between musicians. In an interview two weeks ago, this is what Menahem Pressler, the 91 year old pianist and founding member of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio, told me. It was the experience gained over sixty years of ensemle playing which made the Trio one of the finest chamber music groups of the last century. Does this also apply to ensembles dealing with new music?

Rods and Strings: performing for a virtual audience

BLOG

An Interview with Franz Martin Olbrisch

Berliner Franz Martin Olbrisch is no stranger to the Darmstadt Ferienkurse. He has been a composition teacher in 1994, 2004, 2006 and 2010 and again this year, and has had many performances of both instrumental and sound installation works. This familiarity with the Ferienkurse is easy to see in his most recent work, Rods and Strings. This work, for a modular ensemble of 1 to 20 players, presents the audience with sound objects that they can manipulate, videos and photos from past Darmstadt Summer Courses, and an ensemble performing with live electronics. I recently spoke to Franz Martin about this work, his inspiration, and the process of presenting it at the 2014 Darmstadt Ferienkurse.

Lachenmann: A Self-Portrait

BLOG

Should I defend myself?

Towards the end of the Q&A session after the workshop concert of Got Lost, two consecutive questions were put to Helmut Lachenmann. Both had the potential to induce a more personal response than he had otherwise offered: first, "why did you come back to Darmstadt 2014?' to which Lachenmann unhesitatingly replied with a simple 'why not?!'"; then "why did you come back to teach the younger generation?" to which he declared, "I cannot teach, I do not teach, Composers cannot be taught [...] I hope you find your own way that is all. Should I defend myself?"

Why Write About New Music?

BLOG

For the past three decades, at least, there has been a problem with, for one of a better term, the discursive 'respiratory system' of New Music. In 'Contemporary Music and the Public', published in 1983, Pierre Boulez outlined how people are spellbound by the past and that, in turn, '[t]his historicising carapace suffocates those who put it on, compresses them in an asphyxiating rigidity; the mephitic air they breathe constantly enfeebles their organism in relation to contemporary adventure'.

Yukiko Sugawara plays ...

BLOG

The central place of the piano in traditional music literature poses difficult questions for the twenty-first-century composer. How can this venerable instrument speak with a new voice? And should this new voice remain relevant to the skills the pianists themselves have spent their lives assembling?

Warum über neue Musik schreiben?

BLOG

Why Write About New Music?

BLOG

"The truth is, we can do very well without art; what we can't live without is the myth about art."

Consider the inverse of the question: why not write about new music? There's a case to be made to leave music alone: to abandon efforts to decipher it, analyze it, contextualize it, qualify it, quantify it

Opening 47th International Summer Course for New Music

"I wish this music could provide a little inner quiet, space and concentration: An awareness of the fact that we have a great deal of time if we prepared to take it - that it is better to come to oneself than to be beside oneself." –– Karlheinz Stockhausen

On 2 August, the 47th Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music will open with Karlheinz Stockhausen's legendary composition "Carré"(1959-60) for four orchestras, four choirs, and four conductors, under the artistic direction of Thomas Schäfer. Performers include the Ensemble musikFabrik from Cologne, the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Hessen radio station symphonic orchestra), and the Darmstadt Concert Choir.

IEM Graz: Studio-in-Residence in Darmstadt 2014

After visits of the Electronic Studios of Dresden and Zurich the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) from Graz will be in 2014 Studio-in Residence at the Darmstadt Summer Course. We are delighted to welcome one of the most prominent studios in Europe. The IEM Graz has to face the dual challenge of on the one hand presenting their own research and work projects comprehensively and on the other hand involving interested Summer Course participants accordingly into practice. For this, the IEM team has designed a detailed work and presentation schedule in which key project themes of the studio (including „15 Years of Spatial Audio / Composing Spatial Instruments“, „Virtual MUMUTH“, „Patterns of Intuiton“, Winfried Ritsch’s „Automatic Piano“, „mobile hemisphere“ and space- and soundsculpture in computer music) harmonize with almost daily concert presentations at 6pm.

More information on the workshops of IEM Graz and other tutors of the Electronics Atelier can be found under Summer Course > Electronics Atelier.

Helmut Lachenmann at the Darmstadt Summer Course 2014

Nearly sixty years ago – in the summer of 1957 – Helmut Lachenmann visited the Darmstadt Summer Course for the first time as a participant and met Luigi Nono, with whom he took lessons in Venice later. His first appearance as a composer in 1962 marked the performance of Echo Andante. In 1972 Lachenmann coordinated the Composers Studio at the Summer Course and from 1978 on he was composition tutor regularly – his last stint was in 2006. This year he will return to Darmstadt as a „Visiting Composer“ in the first week of the Summer Course (3 to 7 August). His main focus this time will not be teaching, but working with various performers.

Darmstadt Studies: Research Day during the Summer Course

Two important research projects dealing with the history of the Darmstadt Summer Course are underway at Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Music Basel, both using the outstanding archive collections of the International Music Institute Darmstadt. While the Berlin project „Darmstadt Events“ (Direction: Dörte Schmidt and Pietro Cavalotti) understands the Summer Course as aesthetic, theoretical, and political sphere of action, the Basel project „Focus Darmstadt“ (Direction: Michael Kunkel) uses selected case studies on the performance practice of contemporary music in the period 1946-1990. Under the title „Darmstadt Studies“ both research projects will present excerpts of their analysis during the next Summer Course on 13 August 2014. Please find the detailed program in the PDF.

Composition Courses in Darmstadt

If you've registered for Composition, you are right to expect to get in close contact with the composition tutors of the Darmstadt Summer Course. All composition tutors can plan individually how they would like to organize their classes: as one-to-one lessons, in small groups, in the form of special workshops, with or without selection procedure etc.
Several calls for workshops are still open during the registration period, please look for updates regularly.

Early enough before the Summer Course all registered participants for composition will receive an e-mail where we ask for your special preferences concerning the tutors so that we can see for which tutors and formats there is the highest demand. This will be compared and adjusted afterwards according to the tutors’ timetables. There is not a guarantee for a place with a certain composer, but we try to find fair solutions together with the tutors to comply your interests in the best way possible. In addition, there will be plenty of other offers (last minute places, Visiting Composers) and open formats during the Summer Course.

New Project 2014: ENSEMBLE NIKEL mINUS oNE

Ensemble Nikel offers in its mINUS oNE project a 5 day experience allowing young performers to explore and experience the challenges rising from playing contemporary chamber music in a quartet formation. In this case the quartet does not only invite the performer to deal with typical aspects related with musical coordination, unified sonority, mutual phrasing and breathing, score analysis among others but also involve the challenge of fusing electric and acoustic sound sources into a unified organism that rise from the unique quartet formation based on saxophone, electric guitar, percussion, piano and often added electronics.

Electronics Atelier 2014

The Electronics Atelier within the 47th International Summer Course for New Music (2 to 16 August 2014) will offer - as in the years 2010 and 2012 - far-ranging approaches to electronic music today.
After the demolition of the Darmstadt club 603qm the Electronics Atelier 2014 has lost its home – so the project is currently still in development. It is certain, however, that the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM Graz) will appear as Studio-in-Residence in 2014. In addition to workshops and presentations of their own research and working areas (artistic research, signal processing, acoustics and computer music), where the students can actively participate, the IEM Graz is also involved in various Summer Course projects (including „Disklavier Plus“, „Scelsi Revisited Backstage“ and a workshop concert of Degem, the German Society for Electroacoustic Music).
Individual artists like the French Gilbert Nouno, the Mexican Mario de Vega and the Berlin based Robert Lippok received and accepted our invitations.

Interpretation: 47th International Summer Course for New Music

Lessons with a recognized expert in the field of new music, rehearsals for a work from one’s own repertoire, a lecture, the exchange of ideas with a composer about playing techniques in his/her new piece, trying it out, finding other players, forming a trio ... that’s what a day at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music could look like for an instrumentalist. Or different.
From the beginning of January until the end of March 2014 instrumentalists can sign up online. Only for some instrumental classes special modes of application will be announced on this website, most of the others are open to all musicians interested in New Music. Three Ulysses projects at the Darmstadt Summer Course 2014

Since last year the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) is partner institution of the new European network Ulysses. This network federates European partners involved in the support and promotion of young artists. The partners – academies, summer schools, support programs connected with ensembles or festivals – play a fundamental role in recognizing, accompanying, professionalizing and developing the careers of young European composers and performers. Ulysses is supported by about fifty associated partners.

Three Ulysses projects will take place within the next Darmstadt Summer Course in August 2014: Two special workshops and one concert event. In association with three other Ulysses partner insitutions IMD invited composer and sound artist Peter Ablinger for a workshop titled „Composition Beyond Music" (the call for this project will be published soon on this website), created a project called „Disklavier Plus" (with new works by Steffen Krebber, Vito Zuraj, Lucas Wiegerink and Ji Youn Kang), and re-invited the Swedish ensemble Curious Chamber Players to present its brand-new program in Darmstadt.

Young Ensembles Platform Meeting

Through the project ENSEMBLE and the promotion scheme boost! IMD supports since 2010 young New Music ensembles at the beginning of their careers. An international ensemble network is now initiated with a first ensemble platform meeting taking place in Darmstadt on 5 and 6 September 2013. It is accompanied by Lucas Pairon, founding director of the Belgian Ictus ensemble, who had offered consultations for young ensembles already during the Darmstadt Summer Course in 2012. A continuation of the ensemble meeting is planned for 2014 at the 47th International Summer Course for New Music.

The platform meeting is hosted by IMD who offers the framework (provides space, helps with lodging and coordinating the program), but topics will be identified and prepared by the ensembles themselves. Around 30 representatives of ensembles from Europe and the US who took part in the Darmstadt Summer Course during the last few years confirmed their participation.

35 new Radio Stories on the Darmstadt Summer Course

„Is Darmstadt alive?“ The Cologne based magazine "MusikTexte" asked this question to numerous composers in summer 1984. Today, one could answer: "Very much alive!" - especially with regard to the upcoming 47th International Summer Course for New Music in 2014. And the history of Darmstadt is at least as exciting: On 10 September 2013 the Hessian Broadcasting Service (Hessischer Rundfunk) hr2-kultur starts the second season of the series „Bauhaus, Brennpunkt, Drehscheibe“ (Bauhaus, focus, hub) with 35 new radio stories on the Darmstadt Summer Course (in German).

New at the Summer Course: Harp workshop with Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir

For the first time since the 1960s the harp will play an important role at the Darmstadt Summer Course in 2014. Back then, Francis Pierre and Pierre Boulez had integrated the instrument in the Summer Course work, now Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir takes over the harp lectureship in 2014. The Icelandic harpist who was trained in her homeland as well as in London and Amsterdam is regarded as one of the most important younger representatives of her instrument worldwide. She is a co-founder of the Ensemble Adapter as well as member of the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble. Besides this, she works on the completion of her thesis which examines the role of the harp in new music. Gunnhildur Einersdóttir will present the results of her extensive research and experience within the Summer Course. Also her website encyclopaedia dealing with harp playing techniques and notation will be available next summer.

Again, Frankfurt and Darmstadt are both central venues of the cresc… biennale. The program is now online and will present, besides Zimmermann’s works, also 12 new pieces and will close with Zimmermann's monumental „Requiem for a young writer“ on 24 November at Alte Oper Frankfurt.

Sponsors sought: Bicycle project of the Summer Course

During the Darmstadt Summer Courses in 2010 and 2012 participants and tutors could use bicycles to move between campus, venues and lodgings and so transported the message "music moves" through the town over two weeks.
In order to provide, in 2014 again, bicycles for as many participants as possible for a symbolic fee only, we are searching for sponsors.

New release: "New Music at Darmstadt" by Martin Iddon

In his new book "New Music at Darmstadt", recently published with Cambridge University Press, Martin Iddon explores the early years of the Darmstadt Summer Course. Through a wealth of primary sources - many of them from the IMD archives - and analytical commentary he investigates how the image of a coherent "Darmstadt School" could be created, despite the very diverse range of compositional practices on display at the courses. The book also explores the collapse of the seeming collegiality of the Darmstadt composers, which crystallised, according to Iddon, around John Cages presence there in 1958.

Also recently published with CUP: The correspondence of John Cage and David Tudor, edited and annotated by Martin Iddon.
