Georges Aperghis 70

If you want to surprise someone else, if you want to renew the listening, you have to start being surprised yourself. (Georges Aperghis in conversation with Tarek Kai)

Today, the Paris-based greek composer Georges Aperghis celebrates his 70th birthday. Since 2006, he has been a regular guest at the International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt and is invited for next year as composition tutor, too.

Tarek Kai interviewed Georges Aperghis during the Darmstadt Summer Course 2014 for the Writing Workshop BLOG:

Helmut Lachenmann at 80

Please click on the picture to see the whole gallery. (All photos: Archive IMD)

Only few composers have had such a strong impact on contemporary music and musical thinking like Helmut Lachenmann: by his still challenging artistic conception and his highly differentiated sound world which has extended the spectrum of expression in new music considerably. Today, on 27 November 2015, Lachenmann turns 80.

The festival cresc... 2015 takes Helmut Lachenmann's music into focus. Today at 16:30, the Arditti Quartet will perform his string quartets, followed by a big orchestral concert in Wiesbaden at 21:00 and by further concerts with works by Lachenmann on Saturday and Sunday.

cresc... Images of Sound: 26 – 29 November 2015

›Images of Sound‹ is the motto of the third festival ›cresc... Biennale für Moderne Musik Frankfurt Rhein Main‹, which takes place from 26 to 29 November 2015 and focuses the fascinating interplay of music and film. Highlights include the opening concert by Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra at Alte Oper Frankfurt, featuring Stanley Kubrick’s masterwork ›2001: A Space Odyssey‹, and the final concert by Ensemble Modern at Frankfurt LAB with world premieres of audio-visual works by Simon Steen-Andersen and Michael Beil. These will be flanked by four world premieres of inter-medial music film works by young composers and filmmakers under the title ›Quadruplets‹.

A second focus of the festival is set on the music of Helmut Lachenmann on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Key works for large orchestra are on the program as well as the world premiere of a new version of ›Air‹.

New Jury for the Kranichstein Music Prize 2016

Since its foundation in 1952, the Kranichstein Music Prize (Kranichsteiner Musikpreis) has been closely linked to the Darmstadt Summer Course. It has been awarded 34 times to a total of 175 laureates so far. For many of them the renowned prize has been an important milestone at the beginning of their career as musician, ensemble or composer. The total endowment sum of the Kranichstein Music Prize in 2016 will be 6,000 EUR, consisting of 3,000 EUR for the interpretation prize (ensemble or soloist) and 3,000 EUR for the composition prize.
Since 2010, an independent jury awards the Kranichstein Music Prize. The three-member jury is invited by the artistic director of the Darmstadt Summer Course, Thomas Schäfer. It consists of protagonists from different musical fields and jury members change at irregular intervals. For the Summer Course 2016 accordionist Eva Zöllner, who already was member of the jury in 2014, composer Joanna Bailie and festival director Thorbjørn Tønder Hansen have confirmed their participation.

Call for Projects: Music in the Expanded Field

With the Call for Projects for Marko Ciciliani’s workshop “Music in the Expanded Field“ on audiovisuality IMD starts into the next planning phase for the 48th International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt 2016. We will gradually publish all calls on this website and will constantly provide an updated overview on current calls.

Marko Ciciliani’s workshop on audiovisuality approaches a central issue in the discussion on intermediality and authorship. The call is aimed at musicians, composers and sound artists who are expanding into visual designs while originating their motivations in musical ideas, thereby searching for genuinely audiovisual art forms. Deadline for applications is 15 December 2015.

ENSEMBLE 2016

After the large ensemble projects in 2010, 2012 and 2014 and the successful young ensemble programs in those years, it has become a matter of course that the Darmstadt Summer Course is offering formats for young ensembles besides the composition and interpretation workshops and that Darmstadt can serve as a working platform and network for ensemble start-ups.

In the past, the participating ensembles were chosen by a jury from an international call. This time, IMD will ask a group of Summer Course tutors and former participants who have a good overview on the international young ensemble scene for recommendations. From a list of 10 to 15 nominations IMD will choose a maximum of three ensembles that can take part in the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016.

New: Staubach Fellowships

For the next Darmstadt Summer Course (30 July to 14 August 2016) the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation will grant three Staubach Fellowships.
The Staubach Fellowship programme is designed to provide an opportunity for composers and performers who have already spent time as participants at the Darmstadt Summer Course (or similar equivalent experiences elsewhere in Europe or further afield), but who are still in the process of establishing themselves as artists. Appointment as a Staubach Fellow will provide the Fellow with coverage of half-board hotel accommodation during the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016, travel to and from Darmstadt, and free admission to all Summer Course events, and will provide the Fellow with the opportunity to develop a range of activities.

There will not be an application process for these grants. The Staubach Fellowship jury for 2016 (Rebecca Saunders, Martin Iddon and Thomas Schäfer) will nominate and contact the potential candidates. The Staubach Fellowship programme will replace the Staubach Honoraria that had been granted to young composers from 2010 to 2014.

Dieter Schnebel zum 85. Geburtstag
