Percussion Composition Workshop

The aim of this project is to gather composers and performers in collaborative ventures where processes of experimentation, practical involvement, exchange of ideas and experiences are at the forefront. Rather than rehearsing a finished score for a concert performance, the aim of these workshop is to gain new knowledge into the development of work concepts through practical trial and error.
Five to seven projects will be chosen, and the selected composers will work for two hours each day over a period of ten days. There will be a group of tutors selecting the participants, and assisting them through the process: Composers Rebecca Saunders, Georges Aperghis, Marko Cicilliani, Simon Steen-Andersen, as well as the percussion tutors Håkon Stene and Christian Dierstein.
The players available for the workshops will be smaller groups of the percussion participants. The rehearsals and performances will always take place in the same rooms.
The first meeting will be open to the public, and is an opportunity for the composition students to present their ideas and meet the performers. The following meetings will be organized in smaller groups and are closed to the public (a detailed plan will made until the beginning of July).
There will be a public performance at the end of the workshop.
Projects involving 3 to 5 percussionists and up to a duration of 8 minutes will be realized in this workshop. Suggestions for sonic or compositional ideas, particular set-ups etc. may, in theory, employ any sound producing object of the composer’s choice as long as it is possible to realize within the practical framework of the percussion studio. We encourage participants to opt for small-scale set-ups, and possibly, if employing unconventional instrumentations, bring their own instruments or electronic devices to the workshops. Proposals may be submitted with or without any form of musical notation. The participating composers will have to construct the performance space together with the performers during the process. A theatrical aspect may be included.
