Music and philosophy – music as philosophy? For some time, philosophy has formulated a renewed interest in current music in particular. As part of this year’s Summer Course, the Forum for Philosophy and Art – curated by Jörn Peter Hiekel, Dieter Mersch and Michael Rebhahn, in collaboration with Fahim Amir – will devote itself over four days to shared topics and contemporaneities, but also examine differences between the two disciplines. In three thematic complexes that both unite and distinguish, the conference, featuring international guests, will discuss the de-restriction of the arts (“Surpluses”), “The Political,” and the question of “Music as Philosophy.” In particular, this year’s forum will attempt to counteract the oft-lamented isolation of the discourse on New Music and identify the compositional strategies and concepts as exemplary for reflection on changes within contemporary culture.
