Workshop Presentation: Remixing "A Clockwork Orange"
Schallfeld Ensemble, Jorge Sánchez-Chiong and Summer Course particpants
In 1971, the cult film A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick was released, based on a novel by Anthony Burgess. The soundtrack, besides renowned classical music pieces, contains original compositions by Wendy Carlos, as well as electronic re-elaborations of pieces by Beethoven, Rossini and Purcell. The sound of the Moog synthesizer, connected with the powerful images of this film, have shed new light on these universally known compositions.
Schallfeld Ensemble proposed a call for projects for ensemble with electronics that focus on the music written by Wendy Carlos for the soundtrack of A Clockwork Orange. The aim of this project could be a »transcription of the transcription«. Composers were invited to propose ideas for rediscovering Carlos’ music with new ears: from re-instrumentations that will respect the original formal structure of the chosen piece to new original compositions that will use one of these pieces as starting point.
