Marco Ciciliani: WIDE is the new DEEP
In this talk I will attempt to reflect on the changing demands composers encounter who embrace the media-saturated conditions most of us live in today. For many of them it seems inevitable to expand the traditional artistic vocabularies – often through the use of technology – in order to respond to this situation. For some »sound« alone has even become insufficient to express musical ideas, hence they extend their practices into the fields of e.g. theater or multimedia. Already in 1990 media theorist Norbert Bolz wrote »the new aesthetic paradigm is distracted perception«. What is the situation today regarding our attention-span and our perceptual focus while listening to music? How does it relate to the idea of »cultivated listening« that composers built on only few decades earlier? I argue that a shift in values has taken place, one in which older criteria of composition are replaced by new ones, and where interdisciplinarity often enters even monomodal compositions.
