Things have never been as much like they are now ever before.
After their last visit in 2010, asamisimasa will finally return to the Darmstadt Summer Course. Whereas the Norwegian quartet was known only to insiders six years ago, the five musicians – including one of this year’s two percussion tutors, Håkon Stene – have since then developed an excellent reputation as an equally serious and intrepid ensemble. In 2016, asamisimasa will appear at the Summer Course with works by two composers that represent the aesthetic of the ensemble: Mathias Spahlinger has been working for several years on a substantial cycle of works for the ensemble, which will now present the parts completed so far for the first time in Darmstadt (including the world premiere of faux faux faux bourdon). The British composer Bryn Harrison, whose music was last heard in Darmstadt in 2012, when EXAUDI performed a vocal piece, has written a new work for asamisimasa with the striking title Things have never been as much like they are now ever before. It deals with the delicate, sometimes intricate relationship between memory storage and future imaginings – a dual aspect that could also be seen as encapsulating asamisimasa’s complete program.
