UN/RUHE[DIS/QUIET] is the new genre-crossing project in which the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, together with the violinist Carlin Widmann and dancers from Sasha Waltz & Guests, present a collection of musical and performative counterpoints. The centerpiece of this choreographic concert is the violin concerto still by Rebecca Saunders, bookended by Richard Wagner’s prelude from Tristan und Isolde and Alban Berg’s Lulu Suite. For this project, Rebecca Saunders musically expanded her violin concerto, premiered by Carlin Widmann in 2014, thus providing the basis for the congenial choreographic realization by Sasha Waltz & Guests. For a number of years, the choreographer Sasha Waltz has been exploring the thresholds between the classical formats of concert, opera and dance performance with her company. In the piece gefaltet [folded] (2012) – likewise with Carolin Widmann –, she based her choreography on music by Mark Andre and incorporated the instrumental soloists into the process of the piece’s genesis. Now this approach is being applied in working with a large orchestra – once again breaking new artistic ground to close this year’s Darmstadt Summer Course.
