IEM Graz: StiffNeck - Auralisation as a Tool in Electroacoustic Music Composition

Workshop for limited numer of participants

“StiffNeck” is an auralisation software for simulating spaces based on measured room impulse responses. The software includes an extensive library of measurements from MUMUTH Graz and its multi-channel, variable loudspeaker system. The workshop features “virtual on-site” composition using StiffNeck by taking up different perspectives on space by means of virtual acoustics. It further focusses on the adaptation and documentation of acousmatic music and the construction of superimposed, unreal spaces.

IEM Graz: Composing Spatial Instruments

Workshop for limited number of participants

Compositional processes nowadays often include the design of musical instruments. This hands-on workshop addresses a particular type of instrument or interaction design using motion tracking. We will explore unprecedented possibilities of musical expression, opened up by composing the minutest details of the relationship between human motion and sound.

IEM Graz: Algorithms for Musical Structure Genesis and Analysis

We will present different algorithms for musical structure genesis and analysis developed in the context of the project POINT. The participants are invited to discuss the various approaches with the project team and have the opportunity to experiment with the algorithms in question.

Robert Lippok: Plugin City

Workshop for limited number of participants

6. till 8. August

The German architect Arno Brandlhuber (http://brandlhuber.com) invited Robert Lippok some years ago, to set a previously constructed house into music. The building should be presented on a Biennale for Architecture but not in the usual way with exposed models and drawings, but purely immaterial – and that meant in this case: just acoustically.
The basic structure of the building consists of twelve modules – free linkable with each other. Used materials are concrete, steel, anodized aluminum and phosphor particles staggered with synthetic.
Lippok and Brandlhuber decided to assign to the twelve modules twelve pieces of music in order to translate the materiality into various sound qualities.

Gilbert Nouno: Scoring and Performing Music Electronics

Workshop with selection process

11 to 15 August 2014

For participants of the interpretation and composition courses

Application deadline: 9 July 2014

In his lecture and workshop on composition with electronics, French composer and sound artist Gilbert Nouno will discuss scoring and performing music electronics. The emphasis will be put on musical and creative rather than technical matters. Sonic interaction thinking and insight, but not programming, will be the main topic. Relations between composition, electronics and performance will be explored in workshop sessions from the creative points of view of composers and performers.
