Percussion Ensemble Workshop

Workshop with selection process

For participants of the composition and percussion courses

Application deadline: 30 March 2014

During the 47th International Summer Course for New Music, Christian Dierstein and Arnold Marinissen will offer a workshop for composers and percussionists. Participants of the Darmstadt composition courses were invited to send ideas and concepts for percussion pieces that involve between 4 and 20 players by 30 March 2014.

These submissions were supposed to consist of an idea that can be worked on during the Summer Course rather than a finished score with a maximum of two pages of A4 (text, diagrams or notated musical ideas). The instrumentation will be fixed during the process, but students should stick to common instruments and remember that small set-ups are often preferable!

From all submissions eight projects will be chosen by Joanna Bailie, Simon Steen-Andersen, Christian Dierstein, Arnold Marinissen and Thomas Schäfer.

During the Summer Course, the niew pieces will be developed in daily two hour-sessions over a period of ten days. There will be four coaches to help the students through this process:

Arnold Marinissen and Christian Dierstein (percussion tutors)
Joanna Bailie and Simon Steen-Andersen (composition tutors)

The first meeting will be open to the public and is an opportunity for the composition students to present their ideas and to meet the players. The following meetings will be in smaller groups and not public.

The workshop might result in a finished composition (10 minutes max.), but this isn’t necessarily the final aim. We’d rather create a situation where people can try things out, ask questions, experiment, where there is room for failure and the possibility of finding solutions with the help of the tutors and players.

At the end of the Summer Course we are planning a workshop presentation, open to the public.
