Course with Selection Process
Tutors: Christian Dierstein & Hakon Stene
The percussion studio of Christian Dierstein and Hakon Stene 2016 will include a variety of activities:
1. Lectures and Workshops
with Christof Caskel and James Wood
Moderation: Christian Dierstein & Hakon Stene
2. Call for Percussion Concepts: Workshops and performances
The aim of this “call for concepts” is to gather composers and performers in collaborative ventures where processes of experimentation, practical involvement, exchange of ideas and experiences are at the forefront. Rather than rehearsing a finished score for a concert performance, the aim of these workshops is to gain new knowledge into the development of works concepts through practical trial and error.
Some projects will be chosen, and the selected composers will work for two hours each day over a period of ten days. There will be tutors assisting the participants through this process:
the composers : Rebecca Saunders , Georges Aperghis , Marko Cicilliani, Simon Steen-Andersen , and the percussion tutors Håkon Stene and Christian Dierstein.
This group of tutors will select the 5-7 composer participants.
The players will be smaler groups of the 24 percussion participants. The rehearsals and performance will take place always in the same room (dark class rooms with simple lights).
The first meeting will be open to the public, and is an opportunity for the composition students to present their ideas and meet the performers.
The following meetings will be organized in smaller groups and are closed to the public(a detailed plan will come beginning of july)
There will be a public performance at the end of the courses.
Instrumentation We are searching for proposals involving 3-5 percussionists. Concepts may, in theory, employ any sound producing object of the composer’s choice as long as it is possible to realize within the practical framework of the percussion studio. We encourage applicants to opt for small-scale set-ups, and possibly, if employing unconventional instrumentations, bring their own instruments or electronic devices to the workshops. Concepts may be submitted with or without any form of musical notation. During the process you have to construct your concert hall together with the percussion players.A theatrical aspect can be included.
Duration: 1–8 minutes. Application
Deadline: March 15, 2016.
