On this website we are constantly publishing new calls for the next Darmstadt Summer Course (14 to 28 July 2018). All of the announced workshops are offered to Summer Course participants only. Once you’ve been accepted for a workshop and haven’t yet signed up for the Darmstadt Summer Course, you’ll get a request to do the online booking and registration. We've reserved places for workshop participants if this is indicated in the call.

Call for Applications: Talking About Music

Course with selection process
For people interested in talking and writing about new music, who

  • have a broad and thorough interest in music since 1945
  • enjoy the challenge of finding entertaining ways to articulate complex ideas
  • have already written and, ideally, published texts about new music
  • want to write or broadcast about music at a professional level
  • have an interest in the act of recording (even at an amateur level)
  • have an understanding of the general discourse around ‘music criticism’, ‘culture in the media’ and ‘music and language’ — and, just as important, have bold original ideas to bring to the table
  • be willing to be an active and committed part of a team working to create radio content as well as work individually writing texts

During the Darmstadt Summer Course 2018 Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir (harp tutor) and composition tutors Juliana Hodkinson, Martin Iddon and Liza Lim will offer a workshop for harpists and composers. Participating composers are asked to write a short piece (max two pages) for solo harp, preferably focusing on a specific contemporary harp technique. The goal of the workshop is to deepen the composers' understanding of contemporary harp technique and performance practice. As an alternative, composers are also welcome to present already existing solo pieces for harp.
