Calls

On this website we will constantly publish new calls for the next Darmstadt Summer Course (29 July to 14 August 2016). The calls will all be similarly structured, so that the essential facts are easily to be found at first sight. At the end of each call we will summarize the application procedure. Most of the calls are for Summer Course participants only.

We Spoke New Music : Call for Musicians

We Spoke invites musicians to work on a large scale version of Fritz Hauser’s conceptual work Schraffur during the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016. The work consists in scratching regularly the surface or string of any instrument (percussion or not) and to explore the micro differences in tone that come out of extremely slow shifts in position. All instrumentalists are welcome, we will be providing scratchable instruments and sticks to those who don’t have one. We will have a short daily cession from 3rd to 5th August, and a longer cession with the composer himself on 6th and 7th, culminating with a late morning performance on 7th August. If you like to take part, please e-mail

Call for Viola Pieces: Viola in My/Our Life

VIOLA IN MY/OUR LIFE

A project with Geneviève Strosser and Dimitrios Polisoidis

Special Project for Composers and Violists

Composers taking part in the Summer Course can contribute short pieces for 1-3 violas with a duration of 3-5 minutes. The content of these compositions should be inspired by the course title “Viola in My/Our Life” Tempo and dynamic indications in the score should be hidden from the performers, as the challenge for them is to prepare a version of the piece according to their own ideas. In this special project, there will subsequently be a comparison in which the composer’s “secret” is revealed and the question of the “correct interpretation” is discussed.
Compositions should be accompanied by a short text in which, beyond compositional, formal or instrumental matters, there are also hints at the inner necessity of writing the piece.
It would also be appreciated if participants in the viola course could compose or improvise short pieces of their own with the same thematic background (“Viola in My/Our Life”).
A selection of these compositions will be discussed in the context of this special project, rehearsed in different versions in collaboration with everyone involved. Interested composers may please contact the two tutors as soon as possible and send first sketches so that the tutors can decide whether the projects can be realized in the short time frame: This email address is being protected from spambots. The scores (PDF) have to be completed by 15 July 2016.

Participating composers are asked to write a short piece/sketch (max two pages) for solo harp, preferably focusing on a specific contemporary harp technique. The goal of the workshop is to deepen the composers' understanding of contemporary harp technique and performance practice. As an alternative, composers are also welcome to present short new or already existing solo pieces for harp. Participants of the composition courses can e-mail by 1 July 2016 a sketch of a new composition planned for this workshop (if necessary with a short text explaining the planned composition) OR a PDF file of ONE existing composition for harp solo to This email address is being protected from spambots. We Spoke New Music: Call for Works-in-progress

Workshop with selection procedure
For participants of the composition courses

Submission deadline: 24 June 2016

We Spoke invites composers taking part in the Darmstadt Summer Course to submit work-in progress compositions and/or sketches involving up to four percussionists, amplification, live electronics and various controllers by 24 June 2016.
Each of the five musicians will have a personal sound card with microphones, controller and will be running Max/MSP on individual computers. This will allow to explore the possibilities of multiple patches to be used individually and simultaneously by each player. We will have a surround sound system (5.1) installed with a fully flexible routing system, allowing to explore spacialisation too.
Robert Torche will also offer Max/MSP tutorials and will be available to develop Max/MSP patches on the basis of an idea, for composers who don’t necessarily have experience with electronics software. The four performers are percussionists/drummers and Robert is a Max/MSP expert as well as a very skilled gyro-controllers user (check this). All performers will also be happy to use their other basic instrumental and vocal skills.

Please see detailed PDF chart (link on the right) for skills, instruments and equipment available.
