PERFORMING MATTERS – DARMSTADT SUMMER COURSE 2014

The enlightened Man of the future will be a singer, a musician who feels and thinks in musical categories – Karlheinz Stockhausen

On 2 August, the 47th Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music will open with Karlheinz Stockhausen's legendary composition "Carré"(1959-60) for four orchestras, four choirs, and four conductors, under the artistic direction of Thomas Schäfer. Performers include the Ensemble musikFabrik from Cologne, the hr-Sinfonieorchester (Hessen radio station symphonic orchestra), and the Darmstadt Concert Choir.

Almost 50 years after the first edition, the Darmstadt event is still about young composers creating new auditive experiences, in which each listener is in direct contact with his/her own sound-space environment. The courses include a two-week festival (2-16 August 2014) with over 30 concerts, performances, semi-scenic musical theater events, and experimental interventions, which will take place in several different locations and spaces in Darmstadt.

Founded in 1946, the Darmstadt Summer Courses are summer academy, discussion forum, and festival all in one. Almost 400 young composers, performers, sound artists, and academics from over 50 countries gather in Darmstadt for this event every two years. The 25 premiere events will explore the performance requisites for contemporary music and introduce new forms of presentation. PERFORMING MATTERS not only marks 55 years of the interpretation of New Music: it also shapes the ideas and visions of the future.

Highlight of this year's Summer Courses will be the open-air project "Dead Serious" by the Belgian Ensemble Nadar and the Iraqi artist Wafaa Bilal, a spectacular happening that will take place in Georg-Büchner-Platz in front of the State Theater (5 August); the Scelsi Backstage Revisited Weekend performed by the Klangforum Wien, featuring concerts and a symposium on the music of Giacinto Scelsi (9-10 August); and the Finale Concert HOT_cool performed by the Chicago's Ensemble Dal Niente (16 August).

The 47th Darmstadt International Summer Courses will be promoted by the Darmstadt International Music Institute (IMD), an institute for culture in the City of Science Darmstadt, and kindly supported by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain, the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the Art Foundation NRW, the Ministry for Science and Art of Hessen, and the German Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The Wire and hr2-kultur are media partners.
