The relationship between New Music and society and the question of socio-critical commitment via art have played an increasingly important role in recent years. In New Music too, the lost treasure of “critique” is being updated. What form does critique take today? What distinguishes it from “avant-garde” critique? What strategies can one observe?

The workshop is geared towards performers, composers and theorists. We will approach the topic both theoretically and practically via three focuses with different guest tutors.

Figures of Intervention – Bodies in Public

Tutors: David Helbich & Florian Malzacher

Workshop series

Open to all participants of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016

A choreographer is standing on Taksim Square, alone. A listener is standing in a car park. A lover is waiting at the corner of the street for his date. Protesters are sitting on a crossway, a woman is lying on a door post, someone is having a picnic.
“Figures of Interventions” discusses, compares, activates performative gestures from the fields of theatre, (new) music, dance, performance art, from daily life and political activism.
By brainstorming contemporary and historic examples of artistic and social interventions – mainly in public spaces – we aim to tackle performative practices beyond genre-internal notions of material, often inspired by our very own bodily and social experiences.

Being able to share knowledge and expertise with colleagues is essential for the development of an inde pendent professional artist. In performance arts such as theatre and dance concrete methods and strategies for peer-to-peer feedback are widespread; within contemporary music practice, however, the topic has not been given much formal attention. The feedback workshop proposed by the Darmstadt Summer Course 2016 is inspired by a method for actors and visual artists created by philosopher Karim Bennamar for the DasArts School in Holland. In addition to teaching musicians specific skills on how to give and receive objective and constructive feedback, the workshop will allow participants to present works in progress to open-minded colleagues.
