REMIXING A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Background
In 1971, the cult film "A Clockwork Orange" by Stanley Kubrick was released, based on a novel by Anthony Burgess. The soundtrack, besides renowned classical music pieces, contains original compositions by Wendy Carlos, as well as electronic re-elaborations of pieces by Beethoven, Rossini and Purcell. The sound of the Moog synthesizer, connected with the powerful images of this film, have shed new light on these universally known compositions.

The project

Schallfeld Ensemble proposes a call for projects for ensemble with electronics that will focus on the music written by Wendy Carlos for the soundtrack of “A Clockwork Orange”. Wendy Carlos transcribed pieces by Beethoven, Purcell and Rossini, bringing them into her own unique music world. We are looking for composers that will give a creative and personal vision of Wendy Carlos’ re-elaborations, adding to them a new layer of meanings. We can say that the aim of this project could be a “transcription of the transcription”. Composers are invited to propose ideas for rediscovering Carlos’ music with new ears: from re-instrumentations that will respect the original formal structure of the chosen piece to new original compositions that will use one of these pieces as starting point. Any kind of elaborations and remixes (in its commercial electronic music connotation) are welcome, but each proposed project has to refer to a particular piece of the soundtrack among the ones in this list:

Title Music from ‘A Clockwork Orange’
Theme from ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (Beethoviana)
March from ‘A Clockwork Orange’
William Tell Ouverture (Abridged)
Timesteps (Excerpts)
Suicide Scherzo (Ninth Symphony, Second Movement)

The Projects proposed should at least involve 3 of the following instruments:

flute (also alto, piccolo, bass flute)
clarinet (also bass clarinet)
sax (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone)
piano and/or midi keyboard (one performer)
violin
cello

It can involve any sub-combination of this instrumentation or the whole ensemble. The use of electronics in combination with the instrumental ensemble is compulsory.

The selected composers will stay in contact with the ensemble and tutor Jorge Sánchez-Chiong during the writing process. During the Darmstadt Summer Course the composers involved will have up to 4 working-sessions with Schallfeld and the tutor between 30 July and 4 August 2016 to work on the pieces. A presentation of the workshop results is intended.
