The relationship between New Music and society and the question of socio-critical commitment via art have played an increasingly important role in recent years. In New Music too, the lost treasure of “critique” is being updated. What form does critique take today? What distinguishes it from “avant-garde” critique? What strategies can one observe?

 

The workshop is geared towards performers, composers and theorists. We will approach the topic both theoretically and practically via three focuses with different guest tutors.


FOCUS I: CULTURE-THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS, 30 & 31 JULY

 

In the two-day culture-theoretical introduction to the topic of “critique,” we will approach selected thinkers: Nietzsche, the great critic of modernity; Adorno, the foremost philosopher of the post-war avant-garde of New Music; and an overview of postmodern theories as well as post-structuralist and deconstructivist approaches. We will end with a look at the present day – the inheritance of post-structuralism.

FOCUS II: CRITIQUE IN THE DRAMATIC ARTS, 1 & 2 AUGUST

The current discourse in the dramatic arts about the social utility of art and political theater can also enable important insights in the context of New Music. The theater scientists Katja Trachsel and Florian Malzacher will spend a day with us devoted to the topic of critique – a chance to think outside the box.

FOCUS III: NEW MUSIC, 2 TO 4 AUGUST

After our excursion into the dramatic arts, we will observe commonalities and differences between the respective critical strategies of theater and New Music. We will answer the question of what strategies we see today for current critical New Music. After an analysis of the current state of critique in New Music with Gisela Nauck, one-to-one and group sessions with Johannes Kreidler and Patrick Frank will address the concepts and ideas of the participants.

– Theorists will have an opportunity to discuss their texts and receive culture-theoretical input.
