OPEN SPACE information and invitation |
One of the main projects of the 45th International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt 2010 is the OPEN SPACE project. This NEWS is an invitation to participate in the OPEN SPACE (OS). The OS is open to all Summer Course participants, to all tutors as well as to the public. If you want to organize your own public meeting, discussion or talk, give a lecture, present a work or thought, play musical recordings, screen a film, or propose other public events, OS offers you the framework to do so. The project is a tool for an unregulated, self-organized, self-motorized exchange and knowledge transfer complementary to the official curriculum of the Summer Course. Please note that the OS is not functional as a private rehearsal space or concert hall, although small scale, unplugged musical events can be realized within the given resources of the eight available spaces in the Campus Mornewegschule in Darmstadt.

Film premiere at the beginning of the Summer Course |
On the second day of this year’s Summer Course (Sunday, 18 July 2010) the premiere of the film „Knots and Fields“ from Andrew Chesher and David Ryan takes place at 5.30pm in programmkino rex in Wilhelminenstraße. Since 2008 both British artists Andrew Chesher and David Ryan have intensely worked with interview and archive material on their film about the Darmstadt Summer Course. The film „Knots and Fields“ documents history and present of this important institution. The International Summer Course for New Music were brought to life immediately after the end of the World War II 1946 and have fast acquired the call one of the most important centres for the music of our time. Nearly all important composers of the present – under it Olivier Messiaen, Edgar Varèse, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luigi Nono, Iannis Xenakis, Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann and Wolfgang Rihm – informed partly several times with the Darmstadt Summer Course. Cheshers and Ryans film which is shown now at the beginning of this Course for the first time sketches a lively picture of these living summer academy.

The Summer Course get closer … |
In less than two months – on 17 July, 2010 – start the 45th International Summer Course for New music Darmstadt with the opening concert of the hr-Sinfonieorchester and the soloist Geneviève Strosser (viola) under the direction of Stefan Asbury. Gérard Grisey’s monumental, 90-minute orchestra cycle „Les Espaces Acoustiques“ which is to be heard in his whole version seldom live in the concert stands on the programme. Also the following concert programmes stand on-line already in main features – information about the concerts within the scope of the Electronics Atelier and to the appearances from the „Call for Young Ensembles“ to arisen formations (ENSEMBLE 2010) is complemented gradually. The words for this year’s Summer Course have excelled all our expectations: Although the registration period ends only on 31 May, 2010, nearly all course places are awarded for six weeks – our present waiting list leads 140 prospective participants. For everybody which are already announced we put from now on practical tips (e.g. the journey to Darmstadt and the different venues) under the menu item Participants Infos on-line.
