boost! – Call for Young Ensembles
Complementing the composition and performance modules of the Summer Course the project ENSEMBLE 2012 offers a variety of instructional modules geared toward young ensembles for new music. By interweaving different project areas and other aspects of the Summer Course, it is hoped that all participating groups will enjoy an intensive exchange of ideas about interpretative-aesthetic as well as practical-administrative topics in ensemble work. From a „Call for Young Ensembles“, which has already been completed, the following groups were chosen for the project: dissonArt ensemble (GR), El Perro Andaluz (DE), MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik (DE), Mivos Quartet (US), Quasars Ensemble (SK). Each of them will hold a rehearsal phase in Darmstadt, overseen at all stages by a team of coaches: composers, conductors and, above all, experienced ensemble players. Results will be presented in a concert program of ca. 45 minutes. The artistic direction of this project is in the hands of Lucas Vis, while coaching will be provided mainly by François Deppe, Bill Forman, Marino Formenti, Uli Fussenegger and Lucas Vis. All ensemble members will be granted partial scholarships for the Summer Course and thus can take full advantage of their time in Darmstadt. Lucas Vis will furthermore offer a conducting workshop for the participating conductors of the young ensembles.

boost! – Call for Scores
Participants of the Summer Course had the opportunity to submit pieces (max. 12 minutes, without live-electronics, preferably less than 2 years old) for the young ensembles (dissonArt ensemble, El Perro Andaluz, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle Musik, Mivos Quartet, Quasars Ensemble) by March 1st. The ensembles together with IMD have chosen from all submissions pieces for their working period in Darmstadt (reading sessions or concert performance). During the Summer Course, the composers of the selected works will be given the opportunity to rehearse their pieces together with the ensembles and renowned tutors. Please refer to the terms of application for details.

boost! – Prize Winners Forum
In addition to the Kranichstein Music Prize scholarship prizes for outstanding performances and compositions are given at the end of each Summer Course. The prize winning interpreters of 2010 will come together in different groupings to premiere new works by the composition prize winners Mark Barden, Tim Mariën and Daniel Puig. The rehearsal process will be directed by Lucas Vis.

boost! – Studio Interpretation
The Studio Interpretation under the direction of Marino Formenti and Pierluigi Billone will discuss in depth questions of performance practice and interpretation by means of few repertoire pieces. This is to take place on two levels: the practical rehearsals of the works under the guidance of Marino Formenti will be complemented by theoretical modules: Roundtables with Marino Formenti, Pierluigi Billone and other tutors of the Summer Course will discuss questions of interpretation aesthetics in – where possible – comparing several interpretations with respect to the reception history. Especially the prize winners from 2010 are called upon to actively participate. Furthermore, highly advanced musicians will be nominated by the tutors in consultation with the instrumental teachers. Rehearsals and Roundtables are open to the public, results will be presented in a workshop concert.

boost! – Ensemble Composition Workshop
Together with Ensemble Dal Niente (Chicago, scholarship prize winners of 2010) Lucas Fels (tutor for violoncello) and Hans Thomalla (composition tutor) and will offer a two-part workshop for composers. From 133 submissions the tutors selected the following participants: Teresa Carrasco, Santiago Tomas Diez-Fischer, Michael Duffy, Mauricio Pauly, Christopher Trapani and Daniel Vezza. The first work phase was held in November 2011 at the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University in Chicago. By means of sketches and parts of new works for Ensemble Dal Niente questions of interpretation and composition were discussed (e.g. extended techniques, methods of coordination in chamber music, notation, aesthetics etc.). During the Summer Course in Darmstadt, the complete works will be rehearsed and discussed in another work phase with the possibility of a final workshop concert.

Visiting Ensembles
In the past few years numerous young and eminent ensembles for new music have become established: several of them, such as Asamisimasa (NO), Nadar (BE), ICE (US), Jack Quartet (US), Nikel (IL) und Ensemble Cairn (FR) visited the Darmstadt Summer Course for the first time in 2010. In 2012 we follow up with besides (BE), Ensemble Linea (FR), Talea Ensemble (US), Curious Chamber Players (SE) and again Nadar as well as the vocal ensemble EXAUDI (GB) and the improvising Splitter Orchester (DE).
The Summer Course will also see performances by some of the most prominent ensembles such as Arditti Quartet (GB), ensemble recherche (DE), Ictus (BE) and Ensemble Modern (DE), the last of which will join forces with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie in the opening concert featuring works by John Cage. Along with their concerts, the visiting ensembles will also be engaged in other areas of the Summer Course, for example by holding open reading sessions.

Reading Sessions
Each ensemble present at Darmstadt has been asked to undertake an open reading session with works by course participants: concentrated modules in an informal setting. This laboratory environment is less concerned with polished performances than with a – hopefully – fruitful work situation, including feedback and interaction between all parties. The Calls for Scores for this have already been completed.

Studio musikFabrik
For the first time a youth ensemble for New Music will be visiting the International Summer Course in 2012: Studio musikFabrik, sponsored by the Landesmusikrat (Regional Music Council) of North Rhine Westphalia and directed by the ensemble musikFabrik (Cologne), will hold a week-long working phase in Darmstadt. Under the guidance of Peter Veale (musikFabrik and tutor for oboe in Darmstadt 2012) and in collaboration with composition tutors the ensemble will rehearse a program for a workshop concert in Darmstadt. Furthermore, the young musicians can benefit from many other offers and projects of the International Summer Course. back to top
Philosophy of Enthusiasm in Career Planning & Creation of International Platform of Ensembles (Lukas Pairon, Ictus/Cohort)
Another project module of ENSEMBLE 2012 intends to offer young ensembles and musicians the opportunity to get advice in the fields of career planning: Lukas Pairon, general director of the Ictus Ensemble, will be present for three days of consulting service in ensemble management, taking the simple principle and philosophy of following one's own enthusiasm as the lead for one's career. For consultations please contact Lukas Pairon directly (lukas.pairon[at]ictus.be) in advance. In an open session on July 18 the Belgian platform of young new music ensembles “Cohort“ will be presented by Lukas Pairon as a model for the possible set-up of a similar international platform of young ensembles. The creation of such a platform will be proposed, involving IMD as the co-operation partner, and presented to the public in Darmstadt. back to top
