“After 1945, the greater Frankfurt area … became a kind of nucleus of the avant-garde.”
Gerhard R. Koch
Letting creativity take wing, letting new ideas take hold: in keeping with this mandate, the Intational Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD), supported by the Kulturfonds FrankfurtRheinMain, is initiating a new, open-format series in the metropolitan area: a prominent platform for the rich, high-calibre landscape of contemporary music in the Rhine-Main region. The name and the program are one: ROTOR symbolizes movement and energy — it rotates around a center, kicks up dust, and is able to move “objects” — ideas, concepts, but also, most importantly in this context, music — from point A to point B. The IMD, with its multifarious scope of activities such as the International Summer Courses for New Music, the Archive and Library, and with its central importance in the New Music Network, brings these forces together in this new series in order to develop projects specifically geared toward the region — together with local presenters, ensembles, and orchestras, with composers, educators, initiatives, and the Hessische Rundfunk as our media partner. These partners share a long history of collaboration with the IMD. Through premieres and spectacular individual projects they generate new impulses for contemporary music which reach beyond the borders of the Rhine-Main region. The new series makes this clear and palpable: artistic evidence of a vital process of constant, innovative transformation in the metropolitan area.
The platform opened in September, 2009: ROTOR — Festival of Contemporary Music in Frankfurt am Main, a concert project of the IMD and the Ensemble Modern Frankfurt in cooperation with the Institute for contemporary music (IzM) of the Conservatory of Music and Fine Arts Frankfurt am Main, the artist’s house Mousonturm, and the Alte Oper, Frankfurt. hr2-Kultur was the media partner.
