“After 1945, the greater Frankfurt area … became a kind of nucleus of the avant-garde.”
Gerhard R. Koch
Letting creativity take wing, letting new ideas take hold: in keeping with this mandate,
the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD), is initiating and implementing a variety of event formats in the metropolitan area in addition to the International Summer Course: Together with many different partners and with substantial support of the Kulturfonds FrankfurtRheinMain it forms a platform for the rich, high-calibre landscape of contemporary music in the Rhine-Main region.
The IMD, with its multifarious scope of activities such as the International Summer Course for New Music, the Archive and Library, and with its central importance in the New Music Network, brings these forces together in order to develop projects specifically geared toward the region — together with local presenters, ensembles, and orchestras, with composers, educators, initiatives, and the Hessische Rundfunk as our media partner. These partners share a long history of collaboration with the IMD. Through premieres and spectacular individual projects they generate new impulses for contemporary music which reach beyond the borders of the Rhine-Main region. Cooperative events make this clear and palpable: artistic evidence of a vital process of constant, innovative transformation in the metropolitan area.
The platform opened in September 2009 with ROTOR — Festival of Contemporary Music in Frankfurt am Main. This idea was taken up in 2011 in the shape of the Biennale for Modern Music cresc... that will from now on combine the forces of the new music institutions in the Rhine-Main area.
In 2012 two major projects around John Cage's birthday centennial were presented: The exhibition "A House Full Of Music" arose from a cooperation with the Mathildenhöhe Institute Darmstadt and for the project "Cage 100 - Artistic Interventions at Darmstadt Main Station" IMD cooperated with Darmstädter Architektursommer, Hochschule Darmstadt and Centralstation Darmstadt.
